Hurricane Kit for Your Pets

As we all know, when a hurricane is baring down on our coast, it can be a very stressful time. With that in mind, it is very easy to get frazzled when realizing that we need to gather supplies for our 4 legged friends. The following is a list of supplies that you may want to have organized before the storm hits.

Supplies

  • List of pet-friendly hotels  - see websites such as Pets Welcome.

  • Vaccination history - Be sure to keep your pet's rabies tag with you!

  • Microchipping information - We highly recommend that all pets are microchipped in case of displacement or separation from you during a storm.

  • Photo of pet - As with your children, this is important in case of accidental separation

  • Leash and collar

  • Carrier or crate - Collapsible carriers that store easily are now available for even large dogs.

  • Food and water - A 2 week supply of food is recommended, particularly if your pet is on a prescription diet.

  • Can Opener - Especially important if your pet eats canned food.

  • Pet Medications - Again, a 2 week supply is recommended. Don't forget your pet's heartworm and flea prevention.

  • Triple Antibiotic Ointment - In case of minor cuts or scrapes

  • Benadryl - In case of allergic reaction to insect stings or can be used as a sedative

  • Digital Thermometer - When taken rectally, the normal temperature for a dog and cat is between 99 and 102 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Tweezers - Perfect for removing small thorns or stickers

  • Cat Litter and Litter Pan

  • Blanket and Toys - Don't forget those things that make your pet most comfortable!
